Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians

Opening in October 2016, the Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians (PCYM) will operate from the high quality facilities at Ormiston Bushfield Academy. This exciting new venture will offer music training at weekends throughout the academic year.

With support from Peterborough Music Hub the Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians is a collaboration between Ormiston Bushfield Academy, Cross Keys Homes and the Guildhall school of Music & Drama and based on the latter’s highly successful London model, CYM, opened back in 1970.

The Guildhall School is now the largest provider of high quality training for talented young musicians in the country and with the introduction of PCYM, Peterborough’s young musicians will have the opportunity to train locally in association with one of the world’s leading conservatoires.

Admission is by audition and aimed at Children and Young People aged between 7-18 years. Acceptance will be based on musical potential and not the means to pay, with bursaries available for eligible applicants. The Centre is not for the complete beginner. However, it will seek to attract talented young musicians, in the earliest stages of learning, who are able to demonstrate a technical and musical fluency. They will be welcomed to audition alongside more experienced players.

The weekly sessions, from 09.30-12.30 each Saturday during term time, will include a mix of individual instrumental lessons as required, ensemble and/or orchestra training, membership of a choir, supporting studies classes, as well as sessions from visiting professors and Guildhall School student residencies. Key skills in regular practice, instrumental and vocal technique, musical analysis and performance will deliver a comprehensive package of training.

A programme of lunchtime recitals will feature across the year and offer those all-important performance opportunities where pupils can display their growing confidence and experience - entertaining Peterborough in the process.

For more information and to register interest in auditioning for PCYM email the Centre Manager – Kirsten Barr - musichub@peterborough.gov.uk.
